Decks and pergolas

Project Description

  • This project was out on the shores of Lake Michigan.
  • The cottage suffered major damage to the existing deck and walkway from a storm that brought down 7 huge trees.
  • This involved total demolition of existing deck. Trees were removed by others.
  • We spent time with the owners to develop a design that they were looking for.
  • A specific aspect that must be included was a beach shower.
  • An additional feature they wanted was a small at the edge of the dune to be able to see down to the beach.
  • After the old deck was removed along with the trees, we laid out the deck and walkways with some ideas finally arriving at what you see in the pictures.
  • The portion of the deck to the right was additional to what they had before.
  • As was the right patio door. There was a bay window in this location prior to this project taking place.
  • One aspect of this project that is a common one no matter what we do and that is, that changes don’t look like changes but rather when finished they look like that is how it has always been.
  • What you see in these pictures is a high-quality composite decking with blind fasteners.
  • You also see a layout design that I use nearly all the time. In this case they chose to use two different colors of decking so the bands were more pronounced as you can see. Use of colors can really give a deck like this a rich look and it shows.
  • The railing is a Westbury Verticable product. It gives security as a railing but does not block the view and in this case the view of the dune and lake Michigan is incredibly beautiful.

Deck Renovation Example

Project Description

  • This job came to me from Hudsonville, west of Grand Rapids.
  • This deck has been built by the family using composite on a treated lumber structure.
  • The Westbury railing system they wanted was more complicated than what a home handyman could do therefore they contracted us to do this railing.
  • This particular Westbury railing is an over the post style meaning that the post does not rise above the railing height to create clean lines.
    • With this railing system, the only post that rise above the railing height are those at the stairs as you can see in these pictures.

Deck Railing Example

Project Description

  • This job came to me from Portage, just outside of Kalamazoo.
  • This deck has been built a couple years prior.
  • The need to block the afternoon and evening sun was the goal here.
  • We put in the post to support the structure, they go through the deck and well into the ground.
  • We then attached the structure to the home and reworked the siding around it.
  • This structure is all treated lumber to be finished if desired, by the homeowner.
